Police seize ‘freebies’ worth Rs 36,270 distributed among voters by candidates | Delhi News


Sarees, scarfs, T-shirts, caps, shawls, patkas and blankets – these are some of the items or freebies that have been distributed by candidates in the fray.

According to Delhi Police data, while maximum number of such items were seized from the high-profile New Delhi Assembly constituency, from where AAP national convenor Arvind Kejriwal is facing BJP’s Parvesh Sahib Singh and Congress’s Sandeep Dikshit, Timarpur constituency topped the list in terms of the money spent on such freebies. While the Delhi Police had not reported any such seizure in the 2020 Assembly elections, this time, items worth Rs 36,270 have been recovered.

According to the data, while seven sarees worth Rs 10,000 have been seized from Shahdara; nine calendars (Rs 100), 127 ‘saving cards’ and six cut-outs, among others, have been seized from Parliament Street.

Moreover, 23 T-shirts, 40 caps, three diaries and 200 pamphlets, among others, were seized from from Tilak Marg; 90 scarfs, three flags, nine T-shirts, 1,000 pamphlets (worth Rs 2,150) were seized from Nangloi and 68 shawls, 22 blankets and 22 patkas (worth Rs 21,200) recovered from Timarpur.

“These seizures are only made by the police but also by enforcement agencies, including the flying squad. After the elections, if anyone wants their goods back, they will have to take permission of the court. Else, after a certain period of time, the items would be destroyed by the police,” a police officer said.
