'Will analyse unexpected results': Congress cries foul after Maharashtra loss, says level-playing field was disturbed

NEW DELHI: The Congress on Saturday said that the party will analyse the “unexpected results” after Mahayuti alliance achieved a significant victory, surpassing the required majority threshold.
Taking to X, leader of opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi said, “The results of Maharashtra are unexpected and we will analyse them in detail. Thanks to all the voter brothers and sisters of the state for their support and to all the workers for their hard work.”

During a presser following the election results, party spokesperson Pawan Khera raised concerns over the electoral transparency and casted doubts over Bharatiya Janata Party’s strike in the election drawing comparison with its lack luster performance in Lok Sabha elections in the state.

Assembly Election Results

“The Lok Sabha election was fought in the name of Modi ji in Maharashtra, BJP lost it. The same state gives the same BJP 132 out of 148 seats within 4-5 months. What kind of strike rate is this? …Is this strike rate possible? Democracy is our concern. Electoral transparency is our concern. Can the BJP reverse anti-incumbency? We complained continuously,” Khera said.
“Jairam Ramesh had complained about the name being deleted from the Election Commission’s website from the house of a woman BJP leader. All the leaders of the Maha Vikas Aghadi had complained. No answer was given…Whether we win or lose, we will continue to question the election process. In a country where exam papers are leaked, can we blindly trust the machines? You cannot shut us up by showing the results of Jharkhand. To date, apart from the poetry, we have not received any concrete answer from the Election Commission,” he added.
Senior party leader Jairam Ramesh also claimed that the “level-playing field was disturbed in Maharashtra” during the election campaign. He further said that the results were opposite to ground situation in Maharashtra a few months ago.
“We will definitely analyse the result that has come. But today we can say that even those who won did not anticipate that this result would come. We were assuming that we will get the mandate. The farmers of Maharashtra are angry, the working class of Maharashtra is against the government,” Ramesh said.
“And the atmosphere that was there in Maharashtra 4-5 months ago, the same atmosphere is there today too, we were assuming this and everyone accepted this. But the results that have come are completely opposite to this. But this does not mean that we will step back from our agenda. Somewhere there is a conspiracy to defeat us… The result of Maharashtra is very strange, I cannot use any other word for it, it is absolutely strange,” he added.
Ramesh also claimed that the results in Maharashtra were brought through a “targeted conspiracy to defeat Congress.”
“The Maharashtra outcome has been brought out through a targeted conspiracy after the level-playing field was disturbed in the state to defeat the Congress… Our morale is not down and we will strengthen the organisation and analyse the results,” Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said at a press conference.
The opposition party, however, hailed the result in Jharkhand, saying the people of the state had categorically rejected the “politics of polarisation” peddled by the BJP.
“The people of Jharkhand have decisively rejected the politics of polarisation,” Ramesh said.
As per the latest figures from the Election Commission, the BJP has so far won nine seats and is leading in 125, the Shiv Sena has won three and is ahead in 53 seats, while the NCP has won two and is leading in 37 seats. In the MVA, the Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar) candidates were leading in 11 seats, Congress in 20 and Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) in 19 seats.
