James Gunn sheds light on why ‘movies are suffering’, says forcing directors to shoot without scripts is self-destructive hollywood news

Guardians of the Galaxy director and co-CEO of DC Studios, James Gunn, recently shed light on the current state of the DC Universe and his plans for its future. Gunn promised that things were going to be different going forward, after a tumultuous decade for the franchise that saw a series of business disappointments and changes in governance. In an interview with Collider, Gunn also talked about the state of the film industry in general, and gave his two cents on ‘why movies are suffering.’

Gunn plans not to copy the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and instead, create a franchise in which the movies and shows can stand independently without requiring audiences to do the homework beforehand. The biggest change that he emphasizes is that no script will be given the green signal unless it is suitable in terms of quality. Gunn talked about his early days in Hollywood, when scripts were considered “important”.

“Scooby-Doo got the greenlight because people liked the script,” he told Collider. You may like the film, you may not like the film, but it got the green signal because people liked the script. People are flagging projects because an IP has to release on a certain date, which means the scripts are bad and films are suffering because of it. TV is thriving because there’s a lot of good television out there, and movies are really suffering, and it’s not because people don’t want to go to the box office. It’s not because people don’t care about that format anymore. That’s because the movies aren’t that good, and it all depends on the writing. A director working from his heart and trying his best with something that has no third act is just self-sabotaging, and we need to stop doing that as an industry.

On the threads, when a user asked if he was going to follow the lead of Kevin Feige (President of Marvel Studios), Gunn replied, “It wouldn’t be exactly like Marvel because before we had a finished script. Nothing is greenlit.” He added, “We’re not about that.” We’re not about ‘see how it goes’. We’ve got an opportunity to take these characters and really step forward and do what we believe in. I’m a big believer that if we tell good, authentic stories, whether a movie does well or doesn’t do well, if you keep the same philosophy, you’re going to create a universe that can be enjoyed. People will like and want to do it. A part of the long haul.”

James Gunn seems to have bridged the proverbial gap between DC and its closest competitor, Marvel. The DCU’s new animated series, Creature Commando, will premiere on December 5, 2024.
