Several activists staged a day-long protest at the District Collectorate office on Thursday, demanding clarification from the Election Commission (EC) regarding allegations of distribution of money by politicians in the state ahead of the assembly elections.
12 protesters participated in the demonstration and demanded that an investigation be conducted into whether the money was distributed and if cash was indeed distributed, strict action be taken by the Election Commission against those involved.
Seema Gutte, a social activist, claimed that various social media platforms and media reports have highlighted examples of cash distribution In many constituencies. “Being workers, we regularly interact with families in the city. Many women reported incidents of money being distributed,” he said.
“Political workers came to our house and tried to distribute Rs 2,000 in cash. When we confronted them, they ran away,” she alleged.
“If rich politicians can spend crores to buy votes, how can honest, middle class people ever hope to contest elections? We often criticize the ‘failed’ machinery in the states Uttar Pradesh And Bihar, but where are they? MaharashtraNow is this morality,” he asked.
Following the protest, the activists submitted a memorandum to District Collector Suhas Diwas, who assured them that their concerns would be forwarded to the appropriate authorities for action.
